Lot 10 hutong, Kuala Lumpur

SONY DSCSONY DSCA few months ago the ground level of the lot 10 shopping mall underwent a bit of a makeover. As soon as i took the escalator down i knew that it was somewhere that I would like to try. Lot 10 have sourced 26 of the countries best stalls and dishes then placed them in a wonderful maze like structure that will make people that love food smile from ear to ear.

SONY DSCAs someone who is pretty passionate about asian food and hawker food culture walking through trying to decide what to have was really hard. There was just so much that i wanted to try, I felt like every corner i turned in this maze that they was something that smelt and looked even better than the last dish.

SONY DSC SONY DSCAs soon as i saw that there was a place serving carrot cake i knew that i had to hit that up. Now for people that are uninitiated might be wondering why there isn’t a picture of a carrot cake above. Well in Singapore/Malaysia they have a carrot cake which rather than being the traditional cake like desert is a dish of stir fried radishes. The reason that it’s called carrot cake is that white radish is also known as white carrot. In addition to white radish this dish also has eggs, preserved vegetables, bean shoots and chilli. Sometimes the simplest things are the best and this carrot cake was an absolutely fantastic mix of different textures and flavours.

As i knew that I was only in KL for a short time and I wouldn’t be able to return to this awesome food hall I decided to make the most of this and after finishing my carrot cake i went out in search of other wonderful dishes. After a short walk i found my next eating destination.

SONY DSCI had ordered a traditional penang laksa. Laksa is commonly known as Malaysia’s national dish so i was hoping that this place would live up to expectations. My first taste of the laksa gravy was fairly positive as what i was greeted with was intense hit of creamy and spicy flavours. The individual ingredients were also fantastic with beautifully tender prawns mixing with crunchy beans (this is something we don’t get in the laksas back in australia). My favourite part of the laksa would have to be the pieces of fried tofu that soak up all that wonderful laksa gravy.

SONY DSCAt this stage i was experiencing an internal dilemma of the senses. My stomach was full but all my senses were enticing me to continue eating! I decided to give in and go for one final thing. I ended with something simple, a portugese egg tart. This was a great way to finish a decadent meal as it was only a few very tasty bites.

SONY DSCAs you take the escalators to the ground level of the lot 10 food court you are greeted with this sign that proudly proclaims “I heart food”. While i was sitting there after my meal my mind went back to that sign and i thought “Me too lot 10, me too”.
